Pfizer Makes Another Attempt to Block Generics
Pfizer is trying to block access to the reduced cost of a generic form of Lipitor. In the past, Pfizer struck a deal with the maker of a generic version giving them access to the European market in exchange for not competing with Pfizer’s brand name Lipitor in the U.S. Pfizer also came out with a $4.00 prescription card to encourage patients to remain on the brand name. This reduces the out-of-pocket costs for patients, but employers continue to pay the high brand name cost. Now Pfizer is offering discounts to insurance plans and Pharmacy Benefit Managers like Medco, Catalyst Rx, Medimpact Healthcare Systems and others that block pharmacies from dispensing the generic version. These PBMs have sent letters to pharmacies instructing them to fill prescriptions with brand name Lipitor even if the is for the generic. The patient will pay the generic copay, but Pfizer and the PBMs will continue to pocket billions of dollars in profit at the expense of employers and Medicare Part D who will be forced to pay the full brand name charge.
Discourage your patients from using the $4.00 pharmacy cards and be aware that Crestor is planning a similar move to stave off loss of market share to generic Atorvastatin.
