Right Steps Activity Challenge: Walk to Win
COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO (June 29th, 2009) – On Wednesday July 1, 2009 the Right Steps Activity Challenge kicked off. Right Steps is a Healthy Directions activity challenge, designed to inspire and motivate members of the community to live a more active lifestyle.
Participants log steps online at MyRightSteps.com and in return get their name entered into a drawing for every 60,000 steps. Participants can use a pedometer to track their steps or they can convert their miles or minutes of activity into steps using a conversion chart found on the website. There are four contests throughout the year where participants have the chance to win $500 dollars. At the end of the year there is a grand prize drawing where one person will win up to $3000 dollars worth of prizes. Past winners have won a walking trip to Europe, and a trip to Disney World.
The latest Right Steps contest winner is Melisa Locke, a Benewah Community Hospital employee. Locke was awarded a check for $500 dollars. During the Right Steps Contest Locke walked more than 480,000 steps, that is 240 miles in just two months! Locke tracked her steps by using a pedometer and online at www.myrightsteps.com. When she started the Right Steps Contest she was walking just 3,400 steps a day, and realized that if she wanted to see the benefits of walking she was going to have to make a real effort to get up from her desk throughout the day and walk. Locke and two other co-works decided to make a point to walk together a number of times during the week. On their lunch break they would do a two mile walk around St. Maries, Idaho, and before she knew it she was walking 15,000 steps a day. Locke says wearing the pedometer kept her aware of her activity level and helped her set fitness goals. She says since making walking a part of her daily life she has a lot more energy. Locke decided to participate in the Right Steps Contest because she wants to get to a healthy weight so she can have children.
The contest is open to all community members. People can register at www.Myrightsteps.com.
